Are there a lot of sunny days in DC?

I'm a 20-year-old from Milwaukee, and I can't stand the weather. It's always cold and cloudy. Summers are pretty nice, but they aren't worth sitting through the terrible winters.

I'm considering moving to PG County(possibly Hyattsville) to work for the fire department and go to U of MD.

My other option is Los Angeles. Might go to school out there since that's where I want to work. I love how it's sunny and perfect weather 330 days of the year. However, I'm not sure I can afford that right now. DC would be free living and school.

I'll be going to DC for the first time this June. Not sure which style of life that I would like more since the East Coast and West Coast are so different.

Another question along the same lines: every time I ask someone about summers in DC, they say that they're "balmy," "humid," "muggy," and "unbearably hot."

I'm OK with hotness, I'm even OK with some mugginess and high humidity.... but is the heat oppressive?

It depends upon whether you're coming from New Orleans or Maine.

Everything is air-conditioned, so unless you work outdoors or have a long walk to the Metro, it's pretty manageable. If you're coming from a northern clime, it does take some getting used to, but it's really not that bad.

Thanks Clare! I'm coming from New England, so there will be an adjustment period for me. I've lived for short stretches (3-4 months at a time) in central CA, central Florida, and SE Florida and the Florida keys so I'm used to humidity, but people have been telling me that the DC heat is extra sweltering and unbearable. Hmmm, guess now's as good a time as any to check it out for myself.

DC weather is horrid. I love my hometown, but it does not stretch to the climate. Summers are as described above. Winters are dreary- cold and rainy. Spring and Fall are fantastic but short lived.

It's very hot. However, I have a lot of coworkers from the Midwest and they love the weather (sunnier, less winter weather than home for them).

DC summers are brutal. It is not for the faint at heart. Many people try to get out of to from late June until late August. Congress has the right idea. At times, it feels as if the air is strangling the very life out of you.

Sunnier than Milwaukee, but somewhat paradoxially also more prone to summer thunderstorms.

I am from norther NY and I moved here and I do not think it is soo bad. Yes it is hot in July and August, but for the most part it is only extremely hot from noon-3 or 4, for 2 months. Other then that it is gorgeous. My husband is a police officer and he does fine with the heat. It really is NOT THAT hot here. Now I lived in Florida for a short period and it was HOT there!

It's not that bad. I'm originally from southern New England (Hartford area) and it gets just as hot up there as it does in DC. The difference is that in DC the heat lasts a little bit longer than in Hartford. But try spending a summer in NYC without the green space that DC has and I find summers in the city absolutely brutal.

Again having lived in Atlanta and spent many summers in Atlanta in the past, DC is a breeze compared to summers in Georgia, which are hotter, much more humid and about twice as long...
