ok. Thanks to all of you, I have now finally narrowed myself down to Arlington. But. being that I am not in D.C and have NO idea about these areas, I could really use some help deciding which was is best for me, my husband, and newborn. Out of these three streets/ zip codes, which would you guys say is the safest?

1) Lee Highway, Arlington, VA 22201

2)
South Walter Reed Drive
Arlington, VA 22204

3)South Jefferson Street
Arlington, VA 22204

I hear some people say the south (#s 2 and 3) are near the pike and have a rougher crowd. Any opinions on that? we are looking for a very safe area.

Thanks!!

Those are broad generalizations. Without knowing what block of those streets you are looking at, it's hard to offer advice. Here is a link that maps recent crimes. It will help you determine how these areas compare on safety: Crime, Home Sales and Schools in DC, Maryland and Virginia - Local Explorer (washingtonpost.com)

first - congratulations, I've lived here a long time and think you've made the right decision with Arlington

Of the 3 finalists, for safety and all the other topics you've raised I'd pick #1 - Lee Highway, easily

while it doesn't sound like your child will need kindergarten soon, keep in mind 22201 is also in a much better school district

#3 is probably going to be a bit rough. You also might want to brush up on your Spanish if you're moving there because that's what most of your neighbors will speak.

#2 could be rough or not so bad depending on exactly where it is but it's probably going to be at least a little edgy.

#1 is a safe neighborhood, and not that long a walk or bus ride to the Metro. I'd recommend it.

imo, every inch of arlington county is safe. don't let people scare you with their latino stories. it is not like langley park/takoma park in maryland. the vast majority are working men, not gang bangers. my friend just moved to arlington, right off columbia pike, and i think its a safe and beautiful area.

I agree with soulquarian. I have friends in S. Arlington, and none of us have ever had a problem. Yes, sometimes the guys joke about "taking a walk through Mexico" to get to the other friends' apartment, but crime-wise it's not bad at all. "Latino" (or immigrant, in general) does not equate crime.

not just a question of crime, she's given a lot of detail about her needs, and Lee Highway is easily the best of the three given what she's looking for
