Does anyone have opinions of the Capitol City Brewing Company?

Are there any other worthwhile local brewpubs around (Rock Bottom Brewery and The Chophouse don't count)?

Dogfish Head Alehouse in Falls Church serves some excellent microbrewed beer.

They're not technically a brewpub because the beer comes from Delaware, but it is still excellent.

For Capitol City Brewing Company, the beer is good. The first time I went it was for dinner, and the food was so-so. The second time was for happy hour, and I liked it better. Basically, stick to the bar food stuff (nothing fancy) and you'll be fine.

Gordon Biersch is pretty good, but again, it's a chain and not from the area. I heard a rumor about a microbrewery on 7th street near Chinatown, but I don't know what that would be.

That would likely be the District Chophouse, but it's south of the Verizon Center, which is away from Chinatown. Corner of 7th and E, NW. I haven't been there so have no clue as to how good it is.

If you're in the VA suburbs though, Sweetwater Tavern (Merrifield, Centreville, and Sterling) is worth a visit. A little pricey (what isn't), but the food is very good, and they have at least five of their in-house brews on tap all the time. Order a sampler and you get about a half-glass of each of them. Add some zippy Tex-Mex eggrolls and you're all set...

Again, not a brew pub itself, but I recommend The Saloon on U St. for a great selection of Belgian Ales and domestic microbrews. Also (of course) the Brickskeller for a huge collection of bottled beer. It's always fun to pay $8.00 for some dusty bottle of beer from Guyana only to discover it tastes just like Budweiser!

I think you're thinking of RFD, which is not a brewpub, but does have a great selection of beer and pretty decent food. I believe they are run by the same people who run Brickskeller.

Rustico, near Braddock Road Metro in Alexandria is similar. Great food, and an extremely wide beer selection, but not really a "brewpub" because they get their beer from other places.

There's also Hops, in the Potomac Yard shopping center, which is a real brewpub, but also a chain. I've been there and I like it, but I'll take Dogfish Head or Rustico over them any day, even if I can't actually watch my beer being brewed at those two.

If you really want to get adventurous, you can make your own beer at Shendandoah Brewing Company, off Pickett in Alexandria. They also have a cafe where they serve their beer, but it's tiny and has a very small food selection. It's the only microbrew place that I've seen that has a dive bar atmosphere. It's interesting to say the least.

I've heard a few things about The Saloon.. what is the atmosphere like in there? My friends and I are looking for a place we can go on a Friday night wearing jeans or shorts and enjoy some good beer, without getting hassled about dress codes, cover charges, long lines, etc.

I really like the Saloon. The rub is that they have lots of "house rules" - e.g you have to order drinks first, and then food separately, you can't stand at the bar and block servers, etc. I've never found these rules obtrusive, but others don't like the place because of them.

I go on weeknights around 7pm... it's mellow, with small crowd of 20- and 30-somethings from the neighborhood. The decor is nice - lots of wood and brick - very lived in looking. I've also walked by on Fridays and seen it packed though.

Thanks jm67,

Thats interesting. So if I walk in on a Friday or Saturday night and there aren't any tables or seats at the bar, they won't serve me a beer? I don't think I've ever been to a place like that, but sounds like its worth checking out anyway. If all else fails I can just go someplace else...
