I stayed at AU for a week as part of a program in high school, and from what I remember the dorms seemed nice. Not insanely small (our beds were not bunked, and we still had room), and I remember this huge wall unit thing with all the drawers and stuff.

Are any of you aware of any off-campus housing that has a high concentration of AU undergrads living there?

Thanks!

Brandywine Apartments on Connecticut Avenue. Lots of AU students, lots of parties with the rest looking on in horror.

If things haven't changed since I went to AU, check out The Berkshire Apartments (4201 Mass Ave.). It had a lot of students.

I have just graduated from AU and had a 2nd floor studio condo at Wisconsin Ave NW and Macomb, which is a mile away from campus. It was great, close to school, National Cathedral, Tenleytown Metro, Starbucks & Giant Foods. It is now for sale or rent.

You don't mention if you'll be a freshman, transfer or grad student. If you're eligible for on campus housing, take advantage of it for one year. It will allow you to meet other students and get a sense of the area. There are many options if you decide to move off campus. AU used to offer off-campus housing listings - may want to check into that option.

Some of the really nice homes near campus have English basement apartments - sep entrance and usually cooking facilities. You may also fnd people who are looking for students to work around house or babysit in exchange or free or reduced rent in their house or basement apartments.

If none of these appeal and you still want to live off campus, neighborhoods to look into include Glover Park (all the way down New Mexico Ave to Tunlaw); Palisades area (take Nebraska Ave toward MacArthur Ave - near Sibley Hospital); Spring Valley (won't find apts but may find group houses or English basements); Cleveland or Woodley Park areas. You might also find rentals in McLean Gardens; 4000 Massachusetts Ave; and some places at 4201 Mass Ave and 4301 Mass Ave - they are just on the other side of Ward Circle heading south on Mass Ave.

Good Luck!
