We are coming in for a week to visit and have reserved a place on New Jersey Ave, SE & K street SE. It is just a few blocks from the new Nationals stadium.
Is this a safe place for a family to stay? We'll be riding the Metro for all of our tourism stuff.
Alternately, we could stay at Quincy Place, NE and ride the red line to our tourist stuff. Which is better?
Perhaps I should add that I will have my 3 daughters, ages 10, 12, and 17 with me. Are we safe walking in the area and taking the Navy Yard Metro in the evenings?
You should probably be fine. Also, depending on when you come, chances are there'll be some games (i.e. lots of people around). Although, with those games keep in mind that when the game is over, they switch all the turnstiles in the station so they all go in, no coming out. Basically, just know that it will happen and either work around it or go to another station (like Capitol South - orange/blue lines).
The main disadvantage to that area (in my mind) is that a lot of the buildings are under construction, so at the moment there's not really a slew of restaurants/shops at your doorstep. That said, you're not far from Capitol Hill and Eastern Market (I know several people who walk home to near Union Station after a game, so this area would be easily walkable).
There are two entrances to the Navy Yard Metro. All the turnstiles are switches entering/leaving on games days only at the entrance closest to the stadium. The other entrance (next to the Marriot) operates normally (although you should expect the platform to be crowded before and after the game).
I would vote for the stadium location as the safer of the two, plus has better access to public transportion. It is a little empty at the moment in terms of eating/shopping options but Capitol Hill (about 3/4 of a mile and a short taxi/bus ride away) has a decent supply of both.

Didn't realize there were 2, good to know
