Hmm, I could take a look, but I assume Bethesda is a lot like where I live now which I don't really want. People say Arlington has a good night life, but it's so yuppie and a lot of just out of college kids.
As for the commute, 270 N is a breeze, I take that already so I know if I can get to 270 without much problems, the commute would be fine. I think I'd probably want to get to 270 via River Rd because Wisconsin is a nightmare going through Bethesda (at least on the way home the few times I tried it).

Well, there are going to be a lot of yuppies and recent college grads almost no matter where you live in DC, period, end of story.
You've just got to find your own spots here...DC's a diverse city with something for almost everyone.
Or you could move to Pittsburgh.

If you think Adams Morgan is too funky I don't know if you really want to live in the city. Unless you mean that it smells bad.
Bethesda won't be a big change from Arlington (actually a step down in my opinion) but it will be way better from a commuter perspective. Glover Park is also probably a pretty good choice though not hugely more urban than Arlington. It does have strip clubs nearby.

I'm not sure you've spent a lot of time in the neighborhoods you dismissed - and I agree that I don't think you really want to live in the city. I think you still want the yuppies of VA as the bedrock of your experience, with perhaps a few more "different" people thrown in for flavor.
Dupont Circle, while known for its gay population, offers a whole lot more than just homosexuality. Many types of people live there and it has a large commercial population.
Adams Morgan, if you actually live there and not just come in from the burbs to party, is quite a nice neighborhood - right on Rock Creek, great lower key weeknight bar scene that plays to the locals, Latinos take over Columbia on Saturday. At night I always heard nothing but crickets out my window at night. I don't know what to recommend if you think it's too funky, though.
I guess I would say Cleveland Park, Mt. Pleasant (which are both right next to Adams Morgan), Columbia Heights, U Street/Cardozo...
