Default What's a good area in DC for a young, educated, single male?

I grew up around northern VA, but I am tired of the burbs. I live in Ballston right now, but I want to really experience the city. I'd like to live in a area with similar people, but a little diversity too. I would prefer somewhere that is walkable. Any suggestions?

Depends on your rent budget.

Capitol Hill would probably work.

Clarendon if you want to stay in VA, Georgetown, Dupont, Adams Morgan, Capitol Hill.

Or Baltimore.

My thoughts....

Clarendon - not really a move, I want to live in the city
Georgetown - $$$$$$$$$$
Dupont - i'm straight
Adams Morgan - its okay, but too funky and too many bars for my taste
Capitol Hill - is it full of political snobs?

Hmmmm, you seem rather picky....kinda like you don't really want to live in the city.

I mean, yeah, it costs more money, certain neighborhoods are funky, some have lots of bars around, a lot of people who live there are politically-oriented, and certain neighborhoods have gay people living there.

Why exactly did you write that you want to "experience the city?"

haha I do. It's just those 4 neighborhoods that were named I have spent a lot of time in already (cept Capitol Hill but I don't think that's the place for me). I'd prefer something new.

Ok then, well Capitol Hill has all sorts of people living in it. It's walkable, has lots of metro lines around it, has a decent variety of restaurants.

Then there's Glover Park, just north of Georgetown. Quiet neighborhood with perhaps the best concentration of ethnic restaurants. Walk to georgetown, bus line goes directly to dupont.

Or there's Columbia Heights or Mount Pleasant, both uptown and very diverse.

I'd throw in Tenleytown or Friendship heights, but really they look and feel like a more upscale version of Ballston.

Really depends on what you're looking for.

Which of those areas do you think I could get a decent 1 BR for about $1300? Also, how is traffic getting out of the city in the morning? I work in Rockville.

I know for a fact you could get a decent 1br at $1,300 in Glover Park. I live in one myself.

Traffic northbound on Wisconsin avenue is basically okay. It's a lot of lights, but it's not jammed or anything.

Have no idea how 270 N. is in the am though.

If I'd have known you worked in Rockville, I wouldn't have mentioned Capitol Hill, that would be a hellish commute.

Have you thought about Bethesda? The inner core near the restaurants has a lot of night life and it would be a great commute.
