According to Money. The Median income in Alexandria was $76,128 in 2006.

MONEY Magazine: Best places to live 2006: Alexandria, VA snapshot

The same source says Bethesda's median income was a whopping $109,417. DC's is probably lower due to a large poverty problem, but $40K won't go very far anywhere in this area.

I generally agree with the OP. However with regards to the negatives, traffic and cost of living specifically, well, welcome to America. Any large metro area worth anything has one or both of these characteristics.

Now the weather, yea it sucks here.

Just my 2 cents.
I think DC's population peaked in about 1950 at 800,000. That was a long, long time ago and it wasn't a slow, natual increase. WW2 and to a lesser extent the New Deal rapidly increased the population of DC. Its time as a middle class, residential city was quite brief.

Yea DC proper never hit the million mark. But the DC region as a whole is growing in leaps and bounds, as are most prosperous places.
