List Of BAD Traffic Spots In Northeast DC
"The Florida Avenue + New York Avenue Intersection"
"The New York Avenue + Bladensburg Road Intersection"
I swear, these areas are worthy of an interchange, traffic is just that bad. In the morning, traffic seems to be backed up from the 3rd St. Tunnel & New York all the way back to Rt. 50 + Veterans Hwy. And on Florida Avenue, things start to get rocky after you pass NY Ave Station. Also, during noon, I don't know why, but BOTH SIDES of Florida Avenue and New York Avenue are clogged with bumper to bumper traffic. If you stand on the bridge at NY Avenue before approaching the intersection, congestion is as far down as the eye can see.
As for Bladensburg Road, I think it is generally okay in the morning time. But it seems as if after 2PM... Bladensburg can get backed up from Montana Avenue until you hit the NY Ave intersection, and once again, NY Avenue is generally backed up to the 3rd Street Tunnel until you hit the Rt.50/BW Pkwy Split.
"Benning Road + Minnesota Ave to H St. + North Capitol St."
I'm not generally around this area in the evening but I know it is a mess in the morning, especially with all the recent construction. Does anybody know what they are working on? It usually takes me 15-20 minutes to get to this area. I usually just make a right when I get to 28th Street, then go up to Maryland Avenue, and ride it down to bypass all the construction. But H Street, is terrible no matter what.
"Kenilworth Avenue/Rt. 295"
This freeway just gets on my nerves period. First of all the lanes are like the size of a pencil. Second, there are virtually no shoulders, god forbid a car breaks down. And traffic just generally seems to not let up at all until you get to the Bw Pkwy/Rt. 50 interchange. I absolutely hate this freeway, the road itself just feels claustrophobic.
"South Dakota Avenue"
You would really think that this is an evacuation route. In the morning, you feel like a turtle joining in with the traffic as you come off of the New York Avenue ramp. It seems to persist until you get pass the construction just pass Bladensburg Road. And OMG, In the evening, its a commuter hell. Traffic slowly crawls along just after you pass Rhode Island Ave. and it seems as if your stuck that way. I think we all breathe a sigh of relief when we finally get to the ramp that joins you with New York Avenue, and then yell out a curse word when we remember that it's not over until you hit the BW Pkwy/Rt. 50 split. And I feel sorry for all the people who have to ride up Rt. 50, cause it's still slow travels until you hit Columbia Park Road.
"The New York Avenue Corridor (The Freeway Part)"
Remember a couple years back when the exit to southbound Kenilworth Avenue was open, and traffic was backed up all the way to Bladensburg Road. It seems as if once you got pass that Kenilworth Ave ramp, all your troubles were relieved (I wonder why all those people were leaving DC only to head back into DC anyway) now that it's closed, I think it's just a bigger headache, especially since you have to take that looping detour which brings you all around the interchange. Im also glad that the freeway part of NY Avenue is also six lanes now instead of four, but it still seems as if it is a headache passing down through here.
Last but not least....
"Minnesota Avenue"
This area is generally not too bad compared to the other roads in this article, but it still a pain, mainly because of the METROBUSES, which clog up the whole road and make huge turns. I also hate how the kids who are coming from Minnesota Ave. Station jump out in the middle of traffic to cross the street and get to that high school on the other side of the road. Metro Station + Major Route + High School..... u do the math.
I know I didn't include the other areas such as the East Capitol Street corridor and others, but I was tired of typing, lol.
