I've always considered it a northern city. It's closer to Philly and NYC than it is to any southern city, and it gets bad winters like northern cities do.
I don't really consider it Northern and I don't really consider it Southern. I suppose I consider it Mid-Atlantic. If we're judging things strictly geographically, it is indeed Mid-Atlantic (and closer to the North than South). In other words, if someone from another country were shown this map and had no knowledge of the Mason-Dixon Line or U.S. cultural divisions and were to be asked what region of the U.S. DC lies in, they would state either "Mid-Atlantic" or "Northeast."

But its below the Mason-Dixon line and only 2 hours from Richmond which is a southern city.
I always considered maybe D.C. the Gateway to the South.
Northern Virginia is "southern light".
The winters in D.C. are not that bad actually. The summers are long, hot and humid.
Also, back in the 1950s and early 60s it was a Country Music Capital. Those were in the days when Country Music was Southern.
The third largest population of Ivy leagurers in the world. Its definitely a northern city with all the smugness and elitism that goes on.. Only thing southern about DC might be the fired chicken sold in soul food restaurants....

It may be a northern city now, but 50 years ago it was very much a southern city.
I think JFK said it best--Washington is a city with Northern charm and Southern efficiency.
...and the winters here really aren't bad. It only appears that way because seemingly no one knows how to plow/salt roads or shovel sidewalks! Of course, I'd take a Boston winter over a DC summer any day.
