The PP makes excellent points. The roads will be choked, and it will all be with tourists who aren't familiar with the roads. Parking will be ridiculously expensive if you can find it. Taxis will be *very* hard to find at that end of NY Ave. (they'll all be downtown picking up the easy tourist fares). Sure you can call for one, but good luck getting it to show up. You'll be WAY too far to walk. Your only real option from out there is to take a bus. If you haven't already booked the room, I'd look elsewhere.

The area is not that great, but from what I've heard, all hotels within a 50-mile radius are booked up. I believe that hotel has a shuttle you can take to Union Station. You can then walk from Union Station to the Capitol.

Your chances of street calling a cab up here like you would downtown are basically nil, however, there is a little secret up here that might help.

Just about a half a block down from where Bladensburg Road meets New York Avenue, across the street from the police station, is the headquarters / garage / dispatch of Yellow Cab of Washington DC (1636 Bladensburg Rd NE). There are dozens of cabs there getting worked on, or drivers checking in / signing out. You can get pretty lucky here if there is nothing on the street. Actually looking at Google maps I'm seeing a few other cab places with their garages nearby.

I once hailed a cab up by the Aboretum. I ended up walking a few blocks and saw a random cab. I flagged him and he pulled over. "I've never picked up a fare up here but I was on my way home and said what the heck".

Agree if you can find someplace closer you'll have a better time, but go with what you can. I'm seeing people rent out in Calvert County already (Chesapeake Beach, Prince Frederick) which is about a 1 hour drive to DC. I suspect the Solomons Island and Lexington Park hotels (about 90 minutes) will soon fill up as well.

Unless there's a penalty, I'd book the NY Ave room and then keep my eyes open for other options. That way, if nothing else I have a place in DC.

There is a hotel shuttle to the Metro (accelerated schedule for inauguration) at the Fairfield Marriott there. It's a new hotel and from what I hear, pretty nice. It is located right off Rte 50 so if you went there, you won't have to battle DC traffic. There will be the other 3.9 million people around, so I'm sure the area will be fine. Just park and metro into DC.

Every single room in DC and nearby areas are booked...and, if not, they require a 4 night reservation at exorbitant prices. Normally, I'd book elsewhere, but if you got into a decent hotel, you're in luck. Stay Warm and Have Fun!!!

Yeah I'd have to say stay with where you're at. Only been in that neighborhood once when I made a wrong turn. No it wasn't pretty. But you'll survive.

Any other time I'd agree with the other folks to look for another hotel but for the innauguration take what you can get and be glad. I think Baltimore is booked too. I told one friend to forget about staying in DC and just get a room in Richmond or Philly.

So yeah stay at the hotel be alert don't leave valuables in the car and you'll be fine.
