Could anyone point me to locations (other than the national monument) of where I could go in the Washington D.C. to get somewhat elevated views of the whole city?
Thanks!

The Old Post Office. I haven't been inside yet, but I've been told you can go up to the top and get a great view.

The restaurant at the top of the Kennedy Center.
Upstairs at Tabaq on U Street.
Can't think of much else off the top of my head, seeing as DC doesn't have much in the way of tall stuff.
A lot of office buildings downtown host receptions on their rooftops during summer.

The Old Post is good.
Drive up 12th or 14th Street NW and look back, not bad either.
There are a bunch of dorms next to the Georgetown University library where you can walk up the stairs and get an amazing view of the Potomac (they're like dorm/apartments so the stairs are kind of open, as is the roof deck).
The Iwo Jima Memorial/Netherlands Carillon gives a good view of the city as well.
There used to be a restaurant in Rosslyn next to Iwo Jima where you could take the glass elevator up and look at the city as you went. Pretty nice.

^^ Both of those are very good. There are also good views from the rooftop restaurants at several hotels in Rosslyn...

I forgot, the Doubletree Hotel in Crystal City has a rooftop revolving bar. We went there for New Year's Eve and it had a great view of the city.

Not quite the views of the whole city, but it is off the beaten path: Mount Hamilton in the National Arboretum has some views of downtown, as well as the azalea collection.
Image Number k5369-5
Azalea Collection
"The best way to see this collection is on foot. A network of rustic woodland trails follows the contours of Mount Hamilton and allows you to view the blossoms at close range. If you want a bit of exercise, you can follow the trail to the top of Mount Hamilton, one of the highest points in the District of Columbia. At this elevation of 240 feet above sea level, you’ll be treated to a view of the Capitol framed by trees. If you’re planning a visit, wear shoes suitable for walking on uneven rustic trails. Park in the Administration Building parking lot and access the collection by walking a short distance south to the entrance to the Henry Mitchell walk. "
