Hi all,

I am moving to DC in Jan 09 and looking for accommodation, found some affordable places in NE DC - Rhode Island Ave (17th St.) and Brookland. But I am little skeptical as I have heard these areas are not safe to live.

Please suggest me locals...

Hi,

None of us can properly answer this question as the main factor is your tolerance level for crime and your 'street sense' that will help you avoid crime. Sure, there is crime there, but quite frankly, there is crime everywhere in DC, from Georgetown to the Capitol to enclaves in Upper NW. How much of the crime you can 'live with' is really your call. Plenty of folks live up there with the crime that is present, maybe you can too.

To that end, I would suggest checking out the crime statistics from this site and see if it is within your threshold. Say look within 1000 feet of that location in the last year or so.

Metropolitan Police Department (http://crimemap.dc.gov/presentation/intro.asp - broken link)

FWIW I wouldn't live there not necessarily because of the crime but because, well, there really isn't much going on up there. Granted I've only driven past and have not hiked around there, but it is quite a walk to the metro and not sure there any 'local' bars you'd hang out at, etc. Are you looking there because of the cost? You might a place in a more interesting neighborhood for a similar price if you were willing to live in a group house (very common in DC).

Good luck.

No to the RI Ave address. Where in Brookland? If its close to the Metro it would probably be livable.

Default Brookland yes

You would be fine in Brookland. Area has many nice people, level of crime is lower than many parts of NW. Kids from Catholic University live in the neighborhood. Focus on areas North of Rhode Island Ave.
