Default East Hill Neighborhood (14th Se and E) near Safeway

Hello,

Does anyone have an overview of the neighborhood in East Hill on 14th
Street SE between G and D streets. I am looking for experiences and or
if this area is improving (not that its bad now).

Can you walk the dog at night without major issues?

How is the demographic in this area?

Is the Potamic Metro an area to be woorried about?

My possible location will be near the Safeway.

Thanks

It's got some problems with crime and overall blight, but it's certainly improving. I'd like to buy there if I found the right deal. Wouldn't rent there though.

2. Can you walk the dog at night without major issues?

I can, but I'm 6'3 230 ex-military and my dog is an ill-tempered doberman. I have no idea if you can though.

3. How is the demographic in this area?

I'm not sure what this means. If you're asking whether or not it's a black neighborhood, the answer is basically yes. But that's been changing slowly for 10 years or so.

4. Is the Potomic (sic) Metro an area to be wooried about?
Again, that depends on you, your level of street smarts and your own comfort level. It's an urban neighborhood in transition. There's crime. And a certain level of tension. There aren't that many locations in the city west of the river where you can live near a metro and pay a relatively affordable price. This is one of them.

Good and bad. As you'll see in many comments, DC can really be 'block by block'. If there is a liquor store on one block that attracts a certain element that may not be present if there was a Starbucks (though you can debate which is worse).

There is a large public housing project at 11th and Penn that doesn't help the area. There are a few other sketchy bits near the Subway (or on a path from the subway to certain blocks).

Take a look at the DC Crime Map and make your call based on what you think your street sense is and tolerance for petty crime in the area.

Whats with the area on 14th street SE between Potomac Metro and E Street having so many dots on the crime map. It looks like a favorite place for some bad guys to jump out at you where that alley hits 14th. Any thoughts?
