I just wanted to point this out because I've seen so many topics about how rude people in DC are or unfriendly, etc. If this were true, then it'd really seem to be an American thing and not just a DC thing as half the poeple are from other places.

I'm sellin'. Any buyers?
could you find those stats for the counties surrounding dc? i could of course but too lazy.

i mean the people who ask questions about moving to dc are generally the professional type. their impressions of dc are based mostly on the main towns of moco and fairfax co i'm guessing. i doubt too many people here are basing their dc impressions on capitol heights or seat pleasant.

IMHO the most arrogant people I have met are in Dallas, TX. Now, let me emphasize that Dallas and Texas as a whole are full of some of the friendliest people around. To me, such presumptiousness, such a lack of respect is the height of arrogance.

Moth - first you made me laugh when you said re your degrees and studying in Europe everyone else " can stuff it". If I were brave enough I'd say the same since I've done that too.

Anyway, I really wanted to agree with you on Dallas - (God Squad aside)! OMG, when we emigrated from the UK we lived in Dallas for 4 years and those people were so stuck up!

Houstonians are much more friendly, down to earth, open, *and* more cultured. So I wonder if Dallas is just insecure about being in the same state as Houston. H-town is world-class and second to NYC in so many areas, and there are large communities of transplants from all over, yet they're not bigheaded about it at all. I spent the best decade of my life in Space City, USA

I sense a little more "neighborliness" in DC than in NYC, making random encounters with strangers quite pleasant. Must be that southern spirit. And in London, well, random encounters with strangers are either nonexistent or unpleasant.

So looking forward to my new life in DC next week.

The other thing about Dallas is it's always banging on about how much better it is than Houston, and Houston won't even bat an eyelid because it knows it's better and doesn't have to prove it.

Sorry, I am done now....I think I am one of those "naturalized Texans". :-D

This thread wouldn't exist without some truth to it. I found the vast majority of DC people to be very rude and obnoxious.

So they don't care about this area where they live. Plus the weather sucks, and the traffic is horrendous. Welcome to DC!!
No actually.

The city's black majority generally is from here, don't work for the govt., were here 5 years ago and will be 5 years from now.

Congrats on buying into every misconception about the area.

We attended a few neighborhood parties and by the third or fourth, they were still handing out name tags because nobody wanted to make the attempt to learn their neighbor's name. We got friendly with one neighbor who invited us to an 11 a.m. brunch and soon as we got there they set a time, 1 o'clock, when they had to 'run'.

First of all, government employees, of which my husband was one, aren't especially gregarious high energy folk. No kid in HS destined for great things says to himself, I want to be a government worker when I grow up. And then there's power. Everyone identifies themselves by how much power they wield. "Hello, I'm *#& and I'm Director of ABC, Divison of XYZ".

Three years... And I couldn't wait to leave!!! Meanest, most self-centered human beings on the planet.

Everyone huh?

Frankly, I've found people who leave with this mindset oftentimes aren't so open themselves.

I originally came from the "black majority," will more likely work for an agency in the Federal Government, and will likely NOT live here in five years!

Interesting that you mention those two places, because I have had a lot of exposure to those places. We all know about the snobbish and holier than thou behavior that transplants bring with them, but let me give an insight about the "DC natives." Seeing the experiences I faced every time I was there, the so-called genuine/nicer/laid-back attitude many DC natives rant about is anything but what describes the inner-beltway PG County community (and to a slightly less extent, the outer-beltway PG County). Most of it in reality is just a bunch of bitter black people - young and old - who sit on their a**es, expect everything to be handed to them because of their race, blame the "man" on all of their failures, and show the most bitter hatred to blacks who work on their own merits to improve their lives, all while turning a blind eye (and not uncommonly, praising and exalting) the thugs, robbers, section-8 leeches, and bums who destroy the communities. And as for those who will deny this fact to the end of the world, they fit in one of three categories:
1) They were part of the popular crow in high school (Good for you. You were too afraid to be an individual and hence acted like a thug/gangsta/rapper to fit in, here's a f**king cookie)
2) They haven't been in the DC area for long (i.e. they became successful at some place where they were actually praised by their community and not seen as a "sell-out" for being educated or speaking proper)

As for the natives in Montgomery County, there are a few of them I recall meeting, but most adults and teens I have come across are from another state or country, and to be honest, most of the "Native" MoCo people are so full of it!

The only people I have really been able to say are down-to-earth, easy to relate to, and don't put up excessive attitudes/cliques/snobbishness are those from outside of the beltway from Northern Virginia. They may be reserved, but what many people don't realize is that being reserved and introverted (not waving and saying hi to everyone) is different from being plain arrogant and exclusive (judging the worth of people by their jobs, political beliefs, residence, and money (or parents money in most cases)).

Well, Ive met down to earth people in PG County, but they were usually the affluent black families that lived in upper-middle class neighborhoods in the outer areas of PG County like Upper Marlboro, Cheltenham, etc.

However, the children of these better-off black families are spoiled as hell, and act as if they are from the hood, saying that they'll fight whoever from whatever hood. Actually, these teens make the suburbs the hood these days... saying things like "Cheltenham Woods" is beefing with "Heathermore Boulevard"....

Like seriously, what the hell, you live in a community were hardly nobody makes under 100k, and you have the nerve to say your from the hood, when your house has 5 bedrooms, 4 baths, and your parents have an Acura, Lexus, and a Lincoln.... meanwhile the parents are just as clueless, saying stuff like "Oh no, our child could never do anything like that" Little do you realize the mayhem that your angel has caused. It's these same parents who grew up in the low income crime stricken neighborhoods who have busted their butts to give better for their children, only to have their children claim something that they aren't.

I bet if you took some of those kids off of "the so called dangerous Crain Highway... aka 301 (apparently that makes it sound tougher)" and put them on Southern Avenue... You know what, you dont even have to take them into DC, just let them be over on Branch Avenue next to Iverson Mall, I bet those kids will never wanna cross the Beltway ever again.
