Default Moving to work in DC area

I will be moving to the DC area in a few months, working in the Reagan building. Will be for at least three years. I am married. Kids are grown...not with us. I can stomach at the most an hour commute each way. I am from SoCal and somewhat used to it.

Probably would like to buy condo (200-250K) or rent for around 1500.00 per month (1br, maybe 2). Schools are not important. Restaurants are important. Not into the nightclub scene; as I am in my 40s. A cool little corner bar would be nice occasionally. My wife is Mexican if that matters....maybe a good mex restaurant-not a dealbreaker though.

I heard Rockville is an OK compromise and the real estate prices are becoming more reasonable. Any advice. I havn't ruled out Virginia

Check out places near old town Alexadnria in VA. I have a a friend who is renting a 1 bedroom condo for $1700 per month. But then again that condo is in the heart of old town Alexandria. Many nice restaurants in old town Alexandria. But per capita I've heard that Bethesda, MD has more than any place.
