Some friends and I are looking at renting one of the houses at the intersection of t and florida ave nw. We're all girls, and a little concerned about safety. Does anyone know how safe this area is as far as walking to and from the metro? Houses getting broken into? etc? Thanks!!

Many college (Howard) students live in LeDroit Park. The area used to be the home to many affluent blacks in the early 1900's. U Street (Black Broadway) was Harlem before Harlem. Florida Avenue is gentrifying but is still suspect in some parts. I would go for it! The old Howard Theater on T Street has received funding and will be refurbished to its orginal glory.

Take a look at the DC Police Crime Map (google it). Get an idea of the street crime there compared to say in Georgetown (34th and O Street NW for example) or Capitol Hill (4th and A Street SE) or Woodley Park (3000 Connecticut Avenue, NW). Then run through some sketchier places like 2000 Good Hope Road, SE or 4500 A Street NE and see how it compares.

Really we can't tell what level of street savvy you have, or tolerance for crime (that can be anywhere in DC). Best to see the numbers and get a feel yourself if it is for you or not.
