Wow...
That's about all I can say to you.

Be careful with that "protection," DC and MD have strict laws concerning "protection," plus Metro bans "protection."
I agree about the kids though, especially in 'that' part of the city.

I've heard of people having their pockets picked but I keep my wallet in my front pocket and most people won't reach in there to steal your wallet. Other than that, I've not really heard of any major physical crimes. I used to ride the green line a little and it "felt" kind of shady at times but I never experienced anything. I rode the orange line (almost the entire way) for two years and that line certainly "feels" unsafe at times too but only because a bunch of high school kids are acting like "hooligans" and fighting/screaming at each other. I never felt like someone was going to rob me.

This was the first time I had seen anything like this. It was 1 a.m. I was returning from a wedding in Newark, NJ. These kids were not just being rude and obnoxious as usual. They were over the top with it. I specialize in bad ass kids for a living. I can deal with that. But these kids (middle schoolers - 13 to 14 years) actually walked over to a white guy and talked loudly to each other about what they were going to do to him, take his phone, etc. He looked like he was time enough for them so they kind of shrugged it off and got off the train.
If it had been earlier and I wasn't dressed up, I wasn't about to just sit there and let them do that. But it was late and my feet hurt. I just wonder why the train operator didn't call security because these hoodlums beat all over the train doors before they entered at Gallery Place and then stuck their heads out the doors screaming insults at people as they left the train at another stop.
And at the laws banning protection.

Well I wouldn't judge entire lines, since the Orange Line through Falls Church and Vienna is not the same as it is through SE DC (Stadium-Armory, Deanwood etc.). Also the upcounty Green Line isn't nearly as bad as the Southern end. The Red Line is probably the nicest out of all of them, except for two stations where rowdy kids generally board: RI Ave and Brookland/CUA. As a general rule, avoid all DC Metro lines the first half hour after school lets out.

Yeah. I mean, it's Metro were talking about here. It's one of the most modern subway systems in the U.S., they have their own police force, and there is such a strong mix of commuters who ride the trains. It's not like it is some haven for criminals. There are some bad parts in DC, but the Metro stations are not it.

Agreed. I don't understand this thread. Metro actually feels like one of the safest things to do in DC. haha

Thousands of people ride the green line everyday and never get killed, mugged, molested, kidnapped or robbed.
