^^^^^^Stuff also happens on the Red, Blue, Yellow, Orange, Bus, Amtrak, etc.... What's your point? The green line is just as safe as any other line. It goes through some sketchy hoods but so does the Orange, Blue, Red line too. There are a lot of ignorant comments on this forum. My personal belief is that most of these people have never been to DC to make some of the statements that I read.

I wasn't singling out the Green line. Just questioning the overly positive tone. Crime does happen on, and around, the Metro despite having its own police force. It's true, though, that the amount of crime is low.

DC has a lot of kids with no guidance from strong adult role models.

The city also has a high dropout rate, and the kids who drop out aren't doing it to join the PGA Tour, the circus, or the Marines.

So there are lots of punks out there -- some violent, but mostly just disrespectful troublemakers, and the Metro is a natural place for them to bide their time.

If you want to feel more confident and secure, carry pepper spray. Keep it with you at all times, on your keychain.

I'm assuming that you're not talking about my comments. I am very familiar with the Metro system and all 5 lines. Statistically speaking the end of line stations Branch Avenue, Franconia/Springfield, New Carrollton, and Greenbelt have the highest "crime" becuase of break ins into cars in their huge parking lots and garages. I never said the Green Line wasn't safe. Metrorail is far and above one of the safest transit systems in the country, but if there was a part of the Metro system that was "least safe" IMHO it would be the stretch of the Green Line between Navy Yard and Southern Ave.

Overly positive tone? All people are saying is that there are far greater things to be concerned about than safety on the Metro system. Of course crime happens there; crime pretty much happens everywhere.

I've been riding since 1979. Maybe if I had not witnessed some of the things I have I would feel just like you do.

red line when the punk school kids get on after class is bad news, green line in the morning is a lot of working poor heading to their jobs who won't bother you

overall, DC is nothing like Philly, I've ridden the green line through Anacostia to Branch Ave, and would do that again anyday over riding Philly's subway from downtown to 30th street station, that thing is a ghetto on wheels

Of course over the 30 years you're going to "witness things". But if you've lived in DC for 30 years, I guarantee that you've witnessed far more above ground than in the Metro. Considering the volume of people who ride Metro in DC, the crime rate on the system is remarkably low.

I never said the crime rate on the system was high. I agree with you that considering all things, it is low. What is your problem?

I just felt the need to stress that at that particular time of night in that stretch of the city, be more alert. That is all.

No problems from me; just supporting the poster who said that the DC Metro was one of the safest places to be in the city.
