The Washington Metro system is very safe, relative to other transit systems in the country, including the Green Line. If there is a sector of the system "less safe" than the others it would be the Green Line in SE DC. However, the difference is negligible. Techically the highest crime stations are the terminal stations with the large parking garages and lots (Greenbelt, Shady Grove, Branch Ave, Franconia/Springfield, Vienna) because of all the car break-ins. I often commute from Shady Grove to College Park via the Red and Green Lines and have no problem whatsoever on either line.

I'm honestly shocked to hear that. I used to commute to Silver Spring and Takoma stations up to 2 years ago, and have also been to Forest Glen and Wheaton stations and have seen no one resembling your colorful descriptions. As a matter of fact when I currently change trains at Ft Totten the vast majority of Green Line passengers changing trains are headed into DC, not to Silver Spring.
