I may get a job tomorrow *squee* in downtown DC and i'm really excited because I've been around these forums for ages now and you guys are always helpful. I hope you can help me again.

Anyway, this job I may get *crossing fingers* is in Capitol South, and while it's a GREAT opportunity and is a good foot in the door, it doesn't pay very much. Essentially, I'll be making roughly $15k a year. I am considering it a long term internship right now haha.

The point. I need to know somewhat cool, affordable and safe neighborhoods around DC that I could live (I want a roomshare). I have been driving around, and I'm thinking Columbia Heights, but some parts are shady and other parts are really nice. Anyway I hope you guys could be a great help to me and let me know. I am looking for a place maybe $400-450 a month, and closer to the metro, because I don't want a car in dc.

First off, good luck!

Now the housing....honestly you're probably just going to have to go with what you can get. Would you be open to a suburban complex with a metro shuttle? That would drive the rent down a bit. As far as neighborhoods, you could try looking in Capitol Hill itself, Columbia Heights, Silver Spring, or Arlington. Maybe also Falls Church. You could also try finding a place near UMD since they'd be charging student prices (I think I saw some rooms in your range up there).

The further out you go the better place you're gonna get for that price. So keep that in mind. In the city I'd say maybe Petworth or Brookland or yes Columbia Heights.

Silver Spring is nice and affordable. The problem is that living near the metro is a luxury that you'll pay for through higher rent. So looking at good solid buslines with stops at a metro station might be a better option. But hey you might get lucky and find something within walking distance to the metro.

Falls Church would definitely be cheaper but you'll want a car. You could get by without it in Falls Church but there will definitely be sometimes when you'll long for your car. Less so in the city. Car free living is best done in DC and possibly Arlington some will say different but that's been my experience.
