Silver Spring Safety
I will possibly moving to downtown Silver Spring this coming July. I understand that the area has been revitalized a good bit. However, I do understand that there is still a bit of crime in the area. Can anyone elighten me as to where the crime is coming from/areas to avoid? Thanks in advance.

I don't think of downtown Silver Spring as having a crime problem. Having said that, the place that is the most seedy is the southernmost part of downtown Silver Spring near the DC border, near Georgia Avenue and Eastern Avenue.

You can check those crime pages that we have posted on here to get a better idea of what happens near where you are going to be living. I have found that most of the crime takes place late at night on someone that is usually by themselves. I really like living in Silver Spring. If/When you make it, definitely check out The Quarry. It has a rockin' beer menu, and 99% of the patrons are quite friendly and from all walks of life.

Walk like you own the place
Downtown Silver Spring does undeniably have its dicey spots. I don't want to live there because of them. But I know two women who live in apartments in downtown Silver Spring, who have walked from the subway 5 blocks to their apt. highrise every day for 10 years without any problem. And they walk ALONE. And are small white women. So my impression is that it may be safer than it looks. You see a lot of groups of Central American young men standing on the streets apparently with nothing to do, and that can be threatening. But they say that if you walk confidently and briskly, like you own the place, you are more likely to be left alone. I keep pepper spray in my pocket just in case.

I sold my home of 10yrs recently in Silver Spring/Wheaton...great place to live. Easy access to 95 & DC. Crime, like anywhere else in america.....here & there. Downtown Silver Spring has a new police/fire station on the main strip known as Georgia Ave...so crime will be at a minimum....great place to live....GL

By the way I can guaranttee you won't see "Central American Men" standing along the streets with nothing to do. They have alot of Mexican resturants in Wheaton, but you can take your family to them & you won't have a problem....Montgomery County is known for its Police Presence & this is well documented...again good luck
