Suggest you go to "yahoo groups" and sign up for the list-servs of the various neighborhoods. Also check crime stats here, but you need the zip codes:
News in 20009 | EveryBlock Washington, DC
This one is linked right now to Col Hts plus Adams Morgan and Mt Pleasant, since all have the same zip, 20009.
Remind me what your budget is. And do check whether GTU has a housing board! I know AU does...
Also if you're moving here soon, you probably could rent something for the summer and use that as a base to go exploring.

Ideally I would like to stay around $1600-1700 for a two bedroom (or a decent size one bedroom w/ den). The most important considerations are safety and convenient access to Georgetown University. I need a place where my Spanish mother-in-law can visit for weeks at a time and feel comfortable. I know it'll be tight but that's the best we can hope for at the moment.

I plan to come to DC in July to look for work and an apartment before my wife arrives in early August. Hope to find an inexpensive July sublet to use as a base. I’ll be driving from Michigan so parking is also a factor. Thanks for your suggestions NWDC.

I'm planning on heading to DC within the next week or so. Hope to roam around, get a feel for the different neighborhoods, and eventually move into an apartment (ideally no later than the first week of August). I also need to look for employment

I'll post again once I find something. Thanks for asking.

What if someone asked what part of DC would be best for a white charactor? This post is racist. You should live where you like not based on race. If you were from Spain does that make you want to live near other Hispanics from Central America like Langley Park?

Eh, what?

Anyway, thanks to everyone for their suggestions. I'm anxious to come to DC and to check out a few of these neighborhoods for myself.

I would like to find an apartment that is convenient to Georgetown (or the Dupont/Rosslyn metro stations), and located in a safe area with a large Hispanic community. I want my mother-in-law (who is relatively young and does not speak English) to feel as comfortable as possible during her stays with us and maybe even make a few new friends.

I'm also concerned about the cost of rent since we are suddenly looking for a 2-bedroom apartment. Any advice or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I think "Spain" is different from "Hispanic."

Strange that a European would seek to live in a predominately Central American neighborhood, particularly a Spaniard who comes from a country recently experiencing higher rates of urban social tension due in part to Latin American immigration. To make an analogy, what the OP proposes is akin to an American who goes to school in Barcelona and searches for a Mexican neighborhood to live in.

The only valid reason I can think of is that OP is probably Latino himself?

If not, it could be that (sorry to be offensive here...) given how culturally illiterate most people in the world generally are, the OP, like many Americans, simply doesn't understand the difference.

I'll never forget the time I overheard a conversation in a bookstore between a Spaniard and an American - the American simply could not understand how this person had never consumed a taco before.
