Default Moving to DC, work near Navy Yard, where should I live?

Hello, All:

Could someone recommend a place to live, knowing that I have to commute to the Navy Yard?
Would it be best to live in VA or MD?

Are there any routes/commutes that should DEFINITELY be avoided?

I was contemplating Arlington or Alexandria, or somewhere nearby.... but perhaps someplace on the MD side might be doable as well, I don't know.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, as I am totally unfamiliar with this area. Thanks in advance
