Default Apartments with a Garage

Hi All:

I have been applying to many jobs in DC, so in hopes that one of them pans out, I have a couple of questions on commuting.

If/when I move down to the area (I am from upstate NY), I know I am going to need an apartment/rental home with an actual, singular garage. It will need to house a dirtbike, a harley, and some tools/a workbench. What is a good area with these kinds of complexes/apartments/homes for rent? In my initial search, I see a lot of tall buildings with garage parking, but I will definitely need my own garage. Also, I will have lots of student loans to pay off, so the cheaper, the better.

Also, are there any up and coming towns for commuters? How is commuting from the WV eastern panhandle? Do people even do that?

Thanks so much!

Sounds like you're going to need to rent a house. Or within a house that has been subdivided into apt. units. The best way to find such listings is through Craigslist or other classified adds; there won't really be a well-known complex to fit your needs.

Some folks commute from WV, PA, and pretty far out into VA. They are known as "super commuters." On the surface of it, the drive may seem do-able as generally the distances covered are only an hour to two hours from business districts in and around DC. What you have to keep in mind is that our traffic is the second worst in the nation. Going less than 10 miles in DC during rush can easily take 30 minutes or more. Statistically speaking, once your commute reaches 35 minutes or more, you are far less likely to stay at the job requiring that commute for any length of time. Employers know this and some now consider it in their hiring decisions.
