Looks like bus is the most cost effective way to go, but you're giving up some serious comfort issues. When you all travel to the Northeast, what do you usually do? I'm sure some of my costs are off, they're mostly guesses.
Tolls on the way to New Haven are closer to $35. Its cheaper comming back south. I try to avoid driving all together if possible, if nothing more because of that god awful 95 traffic. Especially during the summer.
If you are traveling alone, the cheapest alternative would prob be to take a Chinatown bus (~$35 rt) to NY, then from Grand Central Sta take the Metro North to New Haven (~$22 roundtrip). A bit more of a hassle but it'll allow you to see some of manhattan and grab a slice of NY style pizza
The train. Smooth ride. Relax in a big comfortable seat with space, not like an airplane cattle car. Enjoy the scenery going by. Get up and walk around, perhaps get a snack I've made this trip a few times.
I'll argee with everyone else, and say train. Used to take Accela trains up to CT (or all the way up to Boston) monthly. Left on Friday after work (walked to Union station), read and had "dinner" while traveling.
My one regret of being owned by a dog now is that I cannot travel with said dog on Amtrak- I'm now forced to drive up and down I-95.
If you take a different route (ie. 83 to Harrisburg and then 81 and from there to CT, it's still 6 hours and can avoid tolls. That brings down the est. cost and increases your sanity due to the lack of stopped traffic.
Amtrak's Northeast Corridor services (Regional and Acela Express). Faster and more comfortable than driving, but it might actually be cheaper to fly (especially if it's SW out of BWI, which flies directly to Hartford).
