Default Beltsville to Blacksburg (whats the fastest way)

Hello,

I am making a trip down to Blacksburg this friday after I get off work (in Beltsville) around 5pm. I know traffic at that time will be a bear. Does anybody have any suggestions on the best way out of DC??

Well, the most direct way to Blacksburg would be 495 to 66 to 81, but I'm guessing you don't want to do that because of the traffic.

I'm not sure how much better this would be, but you could take 95 to 32W through Clarksville, then I-70W to Frederick, then 340W through Harpers Ferry and Berryville. At Berryville, you could take 7W to I-81. It will add a lot of miles, and I honestly can't vouch for how bad traffic will be. But if you want to avoid the Beltway or 66, I think this is your best bet.

That seems like a lot of miles. Traffic is even bad even going through Frederick on I-70. Does anyone know how bad traffic is going south on the beltway through Pg county.

I would just take 495 to 66 to 81. There aren't many alternatives. I used to live in Beltsville and have tried every alternative multiple times.

I'm not sure why you would go south on the Beltway through Prince George's and across the Wilson Bridge. After crossing into Virginia you'd have to head north to get to 66, adding unnecessary miles.

I used to work in College Park and did the drive from CP to Johnson City, TN numerous times. Blacksburg is basically the same route, except you get off of I-81 a few hours earlier.

Unfortunately, as some posters have suggested above, I don't think there is much in terms of an alternative way out of town. I-495 West/South to I-66 West to I-81 South is probably your best bet.

Google Maps recommends only one alternative (295 to I-495 to I-95 to I-64 to I-81), but that way will be much, much worse in all likelihood. I'd rather deal with 66 traffic than the I-495 to I-95 mess, plus I-95 traffic. I've had to deal with that driving from College Park to Raleigh before. Also, crossing over the Wilson Bridge (via I-495) is not a very great route, either.

I guess you could experiment with ways to cut thru DC, but my guess is that at best, you won't gain much time, and at worst, you'll make the commute even more miserable. But maybe I'm wrong.
