I've never spent much time in the DC Metro area but I just got an exciting job that I'm taking in downtown DC. I'm not sure if I want VA or MD. I love the burbs (closer to Trader Joes the better!) and I want VERY SAFETY so I can get outside and exercise and not worry about my home or car being vandalized. I know there are no 100% safe but... there are definitely some places that are MUCH better than others. For instance, I'm moving from Southern CT where I used to travel for work but leave my condo patio door open for several days with NO incidents (the patio was hidden by woods).

I want to only take 1 Metro train from wherever I live to my work location near L'Enfant plaza. I'm going to rent my first year in the area so I have time to see where I'd really want to live long term. I usually like to rent private condo's from owners because they're usually nicer, in better areas, quieter and better managed. Would like to have a garage but not a deal breaker. No ground floor units or highrises. Here's a link to another unit where I lived in CT (these are also the amenities I'd like. I know this seems like a lot but it really isn't once I find the right location and neighborhood. I'm looking to pay 1000-1200/mth for a 1br.

I'm flexible with MD or VA -- just want to get the best for the money and taxes. Is there a tax advantage to MD vs VA? ANY help will the GREATLY appreciated. We haven't set my start date but I'll probably have to be in place by 1/15/10.

ANY help or pointers will be GREATLY appreciated.
