Having read these forums for a while, is Georgetown really that bad? I've been offered a job at the university inc. housing in the area but also have the opportunity to live elsewhere. I am quite the opposite of preppy/snooty and have many fears about the area
Furthermore, which part of the neighborhood would you advise?
Get a hold of yourself. Georgetown in one of the most affluent and popular neighborhoods on the entire east coast. Most of the people who post bad things about Gtown can't afford to live there.

I don't think he was talking about crime or anything like that. I think he meant more along the lines of stuck up.
I don't know too much about Georgetown. Definitely don't have a problem with it, but I haven't been there much. In my opinion, it's one of the most beautiful neighborhoods I've ever seen. The rowhomes are gorgeous. However, it may have the worst traffic I've ever seen as well. The traffic was so slow one time that my friend that was driving me got pulled over... by a cop on foot. haha He wasn't wearing his seat belt and the cop saw and kind of flagged us down and had us pull over. Of course we couldn't get anywhere since traffic was at a complete stand still.
Georgetown is a great neighborhood in which most people simply cannot afford to live. If you can get a good housing deal through the university, which minimizes or even eliminates your commute, why pass that up in order to live somewhere less interesting and less convenient?
Find out exactly where the housing would be, and check it out personally. Some parts of Georgetown can be loud and crazy at night and on weekends. And some of the houses and apartments are very very small. Also, if you're bringing a car, find out whether the housing comes with parking. On-street parking can be extremely difficult to find, and expensive.
Don't worry about "snooty and preppy." There are all kinds of people at and in Georgetown. And there are "snooty" people all over the DC area. You will not avoid them by living elsewhere.
I would only add to live east of Wisconsin Avenue as you will hear a steady stream of students returning from the bars at night if you live west- the university side.
A) the traffic is awful (It's a little better now that they finished repairing the streets)
B) it has not metro access
C) it's full of tourists
D) it's impossible to walk on the sidewalks at times (crowded)
All being said it's a popular place and charming and all that (not that I can afford to live there), but it's out of the way and I don't find it convenient in the slightest. I find myself in many other areas of DC than there and never want to go there unless I have to.
I think it's just a highly visible minority of mostly Gtown U students who give the neighborhood a bad rep.
The residents there are super friendly and very community oriented in my experience. I'd live there (in a tiny tiny house) if it weren't for the metro/parking issue.
