Default Relocating to DC\Nothern VA

We are being relocated from a small town on the Space Coast of FL to a job in Crystal City. It will just be my wife and I. We are in our early 50's. We are looking for a nice neighborhood where the commute won't be to terribly long. Also my wife will very likely be working in a school system in the surrounding area.
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. We are open to renting or buying...After years in a big house a bit of a downsize won't be a bad thing.
(We are also bringing our Golden Retriever)

Hello, we just moved here in November and my husband works in Arlington. I am not sure what you are planning for transportation, but if you will be using the metro start by looking at the metro site to see where the closest stations are. There is quite a sticker shock here, renting or buying, real estate is very expensive. We are currently renting in Falls Church and my husband takes the metro. Rent in this area for a small 50 year old rambler runs easily over 2200 a month. My best advice is to figure your commute options first and then go from there because there are many nice areas in all directions but it all depends on your commute.
