Default Is it possible?

We are a family of 4 currently sailing around the world and plan to finish next year, and we are seriously considering moving to DC. Is it possible to buy a home in DC that is in a decent area, wait for this, that costs around 250,000. It must have 2 plus bedrooms. By decent I mean relatively clean and not run by gangs. We want to live in an urban environment and not suburbia, but also dont want to live in a mega metropolis loke NYC.

Thanks
Neil

Hum, that is probably pretty difficult. I live in Petworth and while definitely not overrun by gangs it isn't as safe as say Georgetown. It is pretty much residential but has a metro stop and is on some good bus lines.

If you look up in what is considered "North Country" in Petworth then you might be able to find a fixer upper in that range. You would be farther from the Georgia/AVE Metro stop but possibly close to the Ft. Totten station.

There isn't much going on up there but you would be pretty close to downtown Silver Spring and Takoma.

I saw a few houses (one that even claimed to be renovated) for around that price range. The zip is 20011 and I would look above and around Sherman Circle.

That's going to be almost impossible. If you want a safe, urban neighborhood within DC, you're going to find almost no 2+ BR homes in the range you're looking for. Even fixer-uppers in nicer neighborhoods tend to go for more than that, although you might find some exceptions. You might have better luck finding an apartment with a monthly rent that is in your range, but I think you're going to be frustrated in attempts to find a house in a neighborhood that meets your specifications and is within your price range.
