Have the option of moving to Center City in Philly or to Washington DC (the Dupont area). Is one better than the other for meeting people in my age group (mid 20's)?
I think the zip code the serves Dupont Circle has the highest population of homosexuals in the country. So with that being said I would think you'd have more luck in D.C.
I think either would work well. Both areas have pretty strong gay communities, though I don't know if one caters more to a particular age group over another.
Don't know much about the Philly scene, but the DC scene is pretty large...lots of popular gay bars in DC, especially in the Dupont area. For Philly, I get a vibe that it's much smaller and more blue collar than DC's.
DC in general is a much more cosmopolitan, open-minded, and vibrant city that embraces homosexuality. You'll find areas in Philly that are similar, but will probably have to be a little more cautious since it trends more toward the blue collar / multiple generations in the same neighborhood dynamic.
I'm from Philly. There is a gay scene in both cities, but DC is more integrated. If a gay couple walks into a random Philly bar in center city, not being flamboyant or anything, but clearly being together, there is a pretty high chance you'll catch a wtf are you doing here vibe. If the same couple walks into a random bar in Dupont/logan/AM/Gtown/etc area of DC, no one really cares.
I'm not an authority on the matter but according to some of my gay friends the 20's-age gay population is generally centered in the Shaw/Logan area nowadays. I hear that Dupont ends up being populated by older, wealthier gay people, just because most people in their twenties can't really afford to live there. That being said I'm pretty sure the area gets a good amount of 20's gay traffic, although I'm not sure how much of that demographic actually lives in the area.
