My husband recently was accepted to Catholic University, but we are discouraged by the astronomical rent in the area. Can anyone recommend a safe and affordable suburb within a reasonable driving distance from Catholic? He'd be willing to drive 30-40 min, if necessary.

Thanks!

Silver Spring and Takoma Park are both on the Red line, so it's only a 15 minute ride from CU.

Yep. If you want suburban living near CU, this is where you want to be.

The Brookland neighborhood--which is where CU is located--also offers a suburban feel that you may want to consider. There's a small commercial corridor along 12th Street, and some very lovely homes.

You might want to define what is "affordable".

Affordable would be a 2 bdrm apartment in the $1200-$1500/mo range...

I think some of the lower-tier (but still decent) apartment complexes in downtown Silver Spring (zip code 20910) would fall in that price range. Silver Spring or Takoma/Takoma Park (both of which are close to the MD-DC border; in fact Takoma/Takoma Park straddles on both sides of the border, hence the two names) would be very convenient for you, an easy ride on the Red Line and not a long drive either (though some congestion at some spots on the major routes). Good luck!
