Hello everyone. My boyfriend and I will be moving to DC soon. I'm starting school at the end of May and he'll be moving once he finds a job down there. We're looking primarily at Alexandria, because budget is tight. I guess our budget would be $1200-$1500 for rent? Can anyone recommend a safe, clean apartment complex in Alexandria that would fit that budget?? I've been doing a lot of research and many apartments that look nice online are rated as being dirty and infested with bugs. Thanks in advance!

I've had friends living in Foxchase of Alexandria for 3 years, they like it. I've seen bad ratings about the place, but they haven't had any bad experiences. It would definitely fit into your budget, too (they have a 2-bedroom/2.5 bath 2-level apartment for about $1600-1700).

You could also look at Archstone Newport Village. I lived there for a year and liked it, and also have several friends living there who are renewing their leases. My roommate and I moved primarily because we needed to walk to a Metro station, but otherwise it was a fine complex. Try to get an apartment on the 3rd floor to minimize noise (our upstairs neighbor was a heavy walker) and any bug issues (anywhere I've lived, the bugs seem to like ground floors the best). It also gets bad reviews, but when I read them I thought I was reading about a different place. We didn't have any issues with crime or bugs. A 1-bedroom should fit your budget.

Also, if you need to be near a Metro station you could try looking into Meridien properties (one at Carlyle and another at Eisenhower). It's pricier, but their apartments incorporate a sunroom into the plan, so it's like having an extra room. You could even rent a "studio" and be able to use the sunroom as a bedroom. We looked at the one in Carlyle and really liked the building.

In general, while ratings can be useful you have to take them with a grain of salt. People are more likely to seek out a rating site when they're upset about something, so I've found a disproportionate number of bad reviews out there.

Also, if you don't mind living in Arlington I would recommend The Park at Arlington Ridge. I cannnot recommend it enough. Its in a nice neighborhood just south of Pentagon City, and the surrounding area is one of the most expensive in the metro area, but the apartment complex themselves are right within your price range. Each apartment is newly remodeled, and parking is plentiful. They are very pet friendly and even have a small gym and pool to use. The grounds are well kept and are generally very safe. Theres a small shopping center within walking distance with a Giant Grocery store,Gold's Gym,Blockbuster,Cleaners, and a diner. There is also a shuttle service everyday to the Pentagon CIty Metro. I know I sound like I work there, but trust me I don't. Check it out!!!

^^^ I forgot about that one, I had some friends living there too. It is a really nice complex and convenient. There's a shuttle to the Metro, plus buses.
