the DC area has changed dramatically compared to what I remember it as a child in the early 90s.
-In the district, where there were abandoned buildings and housing projects there are now high end commercial and residential areas. The house on Stanton Rd where my uncle and cousins used to live years ago (an infamously poverty/crime stricken area) was demolished last time I checked. I just hope Fenty can continue the progress Williams started.
-In Northern Virginia, what was once a staunch republican and a typical stereotypical Southern area has transformed into one of the most socially progressive and multicultural-accepting places in this nation overnight (and in my view, the only true racially/socially accepting place in this area). Everyone complains about the so-called rudeness of this group of people, but rudeness from most Northern Virginians couldn't be further from the truth...except on the road maybe.
-In Maryland, even though I don't agree with Terrapin 2212's view on race as being a downfall to the state, Maryland has transformed itself from a peaceful state (socially and literally) into the next Jersey. IMO, the trifecta of this state are inept bigoted hicks from the edges of the state, poser-gangster-wigger crowds from B-More and inner-beltway PG, and stuck up as s**t/get everything handed to them by their mommy and daddy teens and young adults. Heck, some of the people in Maryland (specifically Asian women) tend to be both bigoted and stuck up as hell!

Wow, it's always nice to start a post that kicks off so much debate and conversation. I recently was in DC visiting a friend. This was probably the longest streak I had with not visiting the area. I found (in only one night mind you) that the area has changed a lot. (NW georgetown to 14th st). And Yes I know how much N capitol area has changed also. I was suprised to see that there was not nearly as much night life. A lot of the clubs that I used to see were gone. Didn't see many college students out and about either. I guess its how you look at it.

Well, certainly old 14th Street is no longer with us, and it's once again legal to make right turns in that area between 9:00 pm and 6:00 am. All that stuff had to be cleared out in order to allow the needed expansion of K Street to the east. A shame in a way. Certainly enjoyed many a beer at This Is It? and wiled away likely some hundreds of hours playing pinball in the porn place at 14th and H. They had some really good machines in there...

I can also tell you that my wife works in PG Co., in Landover, pretty much in the shadow of FedEx Field, and they have security guards escorting women to their cars at night. Delivery trucks won't even come there after dark.

I wouldn't live in PG Co. if you gave me the whole county for free.

Dc have way more crime then PG county so what are you talking about. First off in Bowie which is located in PG county have 55,000 residents and in 2005-2006 no murders in 2007 only 2 for the yr. In Upper Marlboro also in Pg no murders in 2006-2007 now can you say the same for any area in DC. Pg county is like anyother county it all depends on the area you choose to live. So what if the escort females to their car crime happen any where and females tend to be the victim majority of the time. I know you hear about Virginia where in the most upscale areas their is always a rapist on the loose at least I always hear about it on the news.
I would love for someone to walk me to my car regardless of the area. Even if it was the wealthiest area in the world I still would want someone to walk me to my car because crime happens everywhere and no one or place is safe to walk alone. I have neighbors who work on the bas and they seem to love pg county and the community we live in which is Upper Marlboro Maryland.
I am happy you never want to live here we donot want people like you in our county anyways.

illegal aliens!!! That's the big change in Washington DC. Today, I drive down 16th St, I stop at a red light, I look to my right--I see a car full of illegal immigrants. I look to my left--I see a car full of illegal aliens. They are everywhere, and they also have a new attitude. They seem to believe they own the US now, and they have a right to be here. I have even had some of them tell me that I should speak spanish!!!

I used to live in the Klingle Rd area. I do not think that area has changed a great deal in the last 10-15 years. On the west side of the park, it is still Lilly white, and on the east side, there is a good mix of people. Illegal aliens have been in the area where Keller's bakery is (was), Mount Pleasant, since my arrival to DC in 1989, and that has not changed, except there are many, many more of them (that's no exageration). If you cross over 16th St., to Columbia Hieghts, that area between 16th and 14th Sts has changed immensely. You would not even recognize it if you haven't been there in 10 years. This is the growth area of DC right now. Even the illegal aliens are being pushed out of there!!!

Now, for PG County--listen buddy, I don't know where you are from, but, you should work on your English!!! PG County is indeed a rough place--there is no doubt about that. I can't quote statistics, but, I would be hard pressed to believe that there is any place in DC with a crime rate as high as it is in some places in PG County. PG County is definitely over-run by illegal aliens; and it has a good number of poor people. Having said all that, I don't really know why any Marine would be afraid to go over there. That person's comments were racist, and should be regarded in that light. PG County is the largest County in Maryland, and has extremely nice areas, as well as extremely bad areas. Unfortunately, PG County will probably always have a negative connotation because the feeling is it is a "black" area. I think that even when they get that new waterfront going in PG County, they will put up a big fence to indicate where the "white" area is, and where the "black" area is. It doesn't really matter how much you paid for you house--this is reality. But, if you do have $1Million to spend on a house, you should have taken it to NOVA--that way you will see your money grow, and you would have something to pass on to your children.

Illegal Aliens--that's the big big change, and the thing you will notice the most!!!

First off I purchase my home in Upper Marlboro Maryland in Pg county in November 2006 and I have gain 100k in less then 1 yr. While others are loosing equity we are gaining. This is a new era with very educated blacks. I think whites are getting scared that blacks can afford to live in their community and live their lifestyle. We choose to live in PG county because we are making our own communiy and wealth. In my community have nothing but educated who are living the good life just like any middle to upper class white person. You can visit any commuinty in Bowie, Upper Marlboro,Clinton,Brandywine,Mitchellville,Largo in these areas million dollar homes are dime a dozen they are everywhere with nothing but black people and I love it. I love the fact that my son can look out the window and see plenty of successful blacks. My neighbor on the right is Principal. The neighbor on the left ownes 3 sucessful business. My neighbor 2 door down is a biologist. My other neighbor is one of the president's secret service. I would never tell which one is the President's secret service. In my community we are all under the age of 45 yrs old living in homes that is over 500k. We are making history. We are creating wealth for our chidren. My community have nothing but high rank blacks with plenty of money. Please remember not all blacks are the same just like not all whites are trailer dirty trash who are addict to Meth.

Terrapin, please take a vow of silence. What generation are you? When did your folks migrate from asia? How long have you lived in college park? Do you pay your tuition? How long have you lived in the area?

You need to check your opinion.
