My wife and I want to drive from Sacramento up to B.C. for our honeymoon and we don't want to wait to get our passports, or spend the ridiculous amount of money to expedite the process. We have our Birth certificates, marriage certificates, I have a fix-it ticket a cop wrote me up for a month ago, Drivers licenses, taxes, certified mail etc.. I want to know from the locals in Washington how feasible our luck might be of getting back in, or even into Canada. We want to leave next sunday so what have your non-passport experiences been like. If its undeniably stupid to try to do this then what could we do up in WA and the Seattle region? I hear the San Juans are nice. Thanks for any information.

It is federal law that you have a passport to go into Canada. You are not going to be able to cross the border without it. The San Juan Islands are a wonderful alternative.

Here are the (only) accepted documents you can use instead of a passport:

Getting back will definitely be the problem, if the Border inspector takes a fancy to give you trouble. Probably unless you would pass Hitler's visual criteria, you should stay stateside.

Why ruin a perfectly beautiful experience?

Yeah, getting in to Canada is one thing. Then you have to get back into the United States.

Go for the San Juans, Whidbey Island, Deception Pass, Anacortes, Old Fairhaven in Bellingham - all fun places to visit. I might add Lynden, WA up near the border is a really cute Dutch town. I agree that you may get a across into Canada without a passport if you are lucky but you will not get back into the US.

So what happens if you're not allowed back into the US since you don't have a passport? What happens to you? Do you get to stay in Canada and have medical care provided? Or are you in some kind of twilight zone?

You can get a passport card that allows you to enter canada by car or boat. It's alot cheaper than a passport. You can get one at a drivers licence place. Call before you go only certain places offer that option.

Twitch is right. I walked out of the DL office with a temporary license that was fine for canada, and the real one came in the mail not too long after. Only $15 more than a regular license. I've used it several times.
