Greetings, I am considering a position that will bring me to Olympia. My question is, what can I expect to pay for a starter home anywhere within a reasonable drive of Olympia? For me a reasonable drive is about 30 miles away. I am not interested in a condo, mobile home or townhome. I am single and so a small house is fine as long as it is liveable. I realize there is a big difference in prices between the midwest and WA, but I want to know if there are any homes for people of modest means left and what they start at.
Thanks

I just took a quick look at the MLS in Thurston county and it appears you can get into a starter-type house for somewhere in the low 200k range.

Centralia has cheaper housing than Thurston County and is about a 20 minute drive. You can get a 3 bedroom home for 200K to 250K.

There are currently 26 single family residential properties (no manufactured homes or condos) for under $200,000 in Thurston county. That's good news, as it used to be difficult to find properties in the below $ 200K range.

You might want to check out Shelton and Montesano for more affordable options, which are both becoming "bedroom" communities for Olympia.
