As far as sleeping accommodations, I've been looking at vacation rentals with views of the bay, the islands, mountains or a lake. I'm still trying to find hotels/inns with said views. No luck so far, so if anyone knows of any, don't hesitate to let me know.

Does anyone know of any annual events, or anything special going on this Veteren's Day weekend?

I also had a question about the local Scandinavian Festival. That's something we have down here and go to every year. Has anyone been?

As far as the budget goes, or the kind of housing we're looking for, my parents are retiring, and they're taking my grandmother with them. They've offered to find a property that accommodates all seven of us, be it one large house, a guest house, two homes on one property or something similar. Since there is such a difference in housing prices, we will get a lot more bang for our buck up there. We're not looking to spend more than $900k on a property. We're looking for something with a beautiful view of the islands or mountains, perhaps a lake. I've seen some real estate for sale, but I can't help to think there is more that I just cant seem to find online. Do you guys know of any local sites that might possibly list more local real estate?

Is there a local forum, aside from this - where I might be able to chat more about the Bellingham area, specifically?
900k?

You can buy a pretty incredible property for that. Waterfront on Lake Whatcom or mega view in town.

mod cut:

In your price range, you really need to talk to an insider who knows the lay of the community. I know a few really well connected real estate agents who know folks that that may not be listed just yet but want a solid buyer. There are many spectacular properties in your price range that will fit your needs. Feel free to PM me if you're interested in chatting or getting the name of someone who can help you see what's out there.

Thanks, Bill. I watched that video the other day on Facebook. It's great. How do you feel about it? Accurate portrayal?

Does it rain a lot in November?

We booked our stay at Best Western Heritage Inn for Veterans Day weekend. Looks like a really nice place. Close to everything.

Actually it is a pretty good portrayal believe it or not.

November is very wet. October has been very beautiful. But the last few days the fall storm are rolling in. This is the time of year for our most violent weather.

Significant rain and high wind is not unusual about now. The change of the seasons are pretty cool around here.

The hotel should be ok. Although you picked the single worst freeway exit in Bellingham. The cool thing is you'll get a dose of the very worst traffic Bellingham has right there. It's kinda funny actually. I am a Seattle boy and I laugh at myself getting frustrated there. It's really nothing when compared to a big city.

Good to know. Seeing Bellingham during it's craziest weather is probably a good idea. I just hope it still allows for some scenic aweing. I think I just made up a word, lol.

The hotel itself was nice looking and got good ratings. We drive through LA all the time, so I'm sure it won't be a problem for us, lol.

Okay, I have a question... Who gives you guys better reception in Bellingham? Verizon Wireless or ATT Wireless?

Also, I'm visiting a week from today. Is there any cool places to see pretty scenery when its cold, wet and windy? Any good pub I should visit? I want to live up there like a local for a week. Any suggestions?

Verizon. No contest.

Most if not all the places already discussed are still beautiful in terrible weather. I'd skip anything to do with mountains if it's nasty though.

As to pubs.

Wanna see ballgames?
Slo Pitch Sports Grill & Casino | Bellingham Washington

Wanna gamble in town? (Cozy smaller casino)
Slo Pitch Sports Grill & Casino | Bellingham Washington

Bigger Casino? 15 minutes south of town.
Skagit Valley Casino Resort | More Winners,*All The Time! | 877-275-2448
or 10 minutes north of town
Silver Reef Casino

Brew pub?
The Boundary Bay Brewery & Bistro - Bellingham, Washington
Chuckanut Brewery and Kitchen

Live Music?
The Wild Buffalo

Hi, thanks for the great questions and answers! My family is moving from southern ca to Bellingham this summer as well! We are also coming up to stay for the weekend! We are so excited! A couple of more questions: We are looking to rent in Sudden Valley. We have a freshman in HS. What HS will he attend? Which HS is best? How long of a drive is it really into town or to his HS? Do you know if there is a school bus that will come pick him up? Thank you!!!

Why Sudden Valley?

Here's an attendance map..It's Bellingham High School.

http://bellinghamschools.org/sites/d...ts/hii2006.pdf

It's 15 minutes at least. Maybe more depending where in Sudden Valley. And about that far to a grocery store as well.

All 3 high schools are good, but different.. Squalicum is the newest. Bellingham is renovated too. Sehome is in need of replacement. But it's a very good school nonetheless.

I'd suggest you visit each while you're here. And definately take the drive to and from Sudden Valley. It's not only a ways, you can't speed. Cops here are brutal.

It's nice out there, but you're isolated.

Good information! I"m leaving Tulsa for Bellingham in about 30 minuets. Tho I'm familiar with Seattle and go up there every chance I get, I've never been to Bellingham. I'll leaving on Wed., but will have a little free time today. I'm actually going to be at the Silver Reef Hotel. I'm guessing that is close to Bellingham.

I'm packing light so all I'm bringing is a Northface jacket. Wet doesn't bother me; in fact, I love the drizzly rain.
