Lynden Blue Laws
I've seen many posts lately urging people to consider Lynden instead of Bellingham and other areas...are people aware of the laws in Lynden, barring residents from barbequing and washing their cars on Sunday, among other "Christian"-based laws? Just a heads-up to those who might not know this about Lynden -- from someone who settled elsewhere in WA after finding this out...Lynden is still dry, too, isn't it?

I think the laws there regarding alcohol are that dancing and drinking cannot occur in the same establishment and no alcohol sales on Sunday.....no big deal, you just have to shop for booze on one of the other 6 days of the week. I am moving my family to Lynden next month from Southern California. My Wife's Sister and family live there and love it. We have visited frequently on our way up to our home on Canim Lake in British Columbia. It is a great place to raise children and get away from the rat race of larger metropolitan areas.

Hey, the wife wants you to wash the car on a Sunday, you just throw up your hands and go, 'sorry babe, can't do it on a Sunday. It's the law."

I worked with a Lynden girl for over 15 years, and she told me the rumors are bogus. VinceW is correct, some of the biggest boozers I know are from Lynden! Just stock up on Saturday. I went to a wedding in Lynden where we had to go past the city line to drink and dance. I've never heard about any restriction on barb-b-ques though. If you mow your lawn on Sunday your neighbors will just think less of you, that's all.

I have some friends who live there and if you don't mow your lawn, the city will mow it for you and give you the bill. It's a very nice little city, spent a fair bit of time there while living in Bellingham.

Are there any blue or other unusual laws in other small towns in western WA? Particularly the Shelton/Belfair/Hoodsport area.
Just checking because when I first moved to Sacramento, to be fair to the local butchers' union, you couldn't buy butchered meat on Sunday. I'm not kidding, there was white butcher paper over all of the butchered meat and you couldn't buy it. Not the law anymore, but you never know.....

Wow, it's great that folks haven't gone ballistic commenting about this, maybe there is some hope that some places can retain a bit of conservative identity.. My friends who live there really love it, tho there are some inconveniences. A few families I know have moved there by choice for conservative schools and just a nice mellow community. It would be wonderful to have a few choices like that available.

Some of that mite have held true in the old days, but today its just not true. .Lynden isnt any different than most any other town of that size.it just has a strong family morality, that is missing in most of america today.mow your lawn, wash you car,no one is gonna care .what you will find is that most of the community have family get togethers after church and if you are a neighbor that turns on his noisey lawn mower while they are all out having a bbq and conversing, you be accused of being inconciderate, but hardly ran out of town on a rail. I lived there for many yrs and never ever heard of any of this happening to anyone, aside from the time one houses grass get realllllly tall and dry during bad dry season, then they were asked to cut of for those reasons.

Lynden is still ok but not for long....
All I know at this time is that Lynden is about to lose the "special" charm it has had for so long because the new Northwoods Crossing Casino has been approved and construction has been going on for about a year I think?
It is scheduled to open this fall '07 on the northside of town and much of the community is in an uproar over it.....and I, personally don't blame them one bit.
Not that I have anything against casinos but I believe there are already enough of them in the area without this one really being necessary at all!
Now that the residents of Lynden have been unsuccessful at preventing this casino from being built.......they desperately are now trying to prevent it from obtaining any liquor license whatsoever.
But.....ya know there just won't be a non-alcohol casino. Unheard of!
This new casino will be the closest one to Canada and will surely increase traffic along the Guide Meridian in the area substantially.....along with likely increased drunk driving possibilities. The road is well underway currently at becoming a 4 lane highway from the border into Bellingham and pretty much is already.....north of the border in Canada.
I hate to say it.....but this casino WILL impact Lynden....as a whole, in a negative way in the long run and even though I don't reside there......I truly sympathize with the people of Lynden.
This casino is just wrong for the town, IMO!

Wow! Lynden sounds like the town for us! Although some here have the wrong idea by saying you can't mow or barbecue on Sunday as being "Christian based laws", I'd love it! Any laws like that are definately not Christian based. More like a legalistic view of things.
Anyway, I'd love to live somewhere like this and we have the opportunity to actually live and work in Lynden. The housing prices are a little high but we'd be able to find something. This casino going in is too bad.
