We have a lot of camping here. Is there any particular camping you like? Would you want to be by the water, dry place?

we were considering Forks, but I understand that it is a rainforest, and that this is the rainy season... I am not opposed to the rain, however... I don't really want to spend the entire time drenched. We would like to be near a river, lake or some body of water where my spouse can go fishing. We have been to a few state parks. We want to try a primitive campground now...

Well, pretty much anywhere you go right now is going to get some rain, so you might as well plan on it. Actually, we've just got quite a bit of snow here in the last couple of days. If you want to do Forks, let me recommend a few spots that I think you'll like more.

First is the Hoh Rainforest. It's not far from Forks, but it's right on the Hoh River which is beautiful. You'll have to check on camping, though, because I haven't camped there. And I don't fish at all so I can't help you there.

Another place on the Olympic Peninsula somewhat near Forks is the Olympic Mountains. This is probably one of the most beautiful places in Washington. I think you can get permits for the national park and camp anywhere you decide. Find a book on it and pick the place you want.

We really have so many places it's hard to pick one. Mt Rainier is another good place.

Olympic National Park campgrounds:

Olympic National Park - Campgrounds (U.S. National Park Service)

The Mount Rainier campgrounds are closed and likely won't be open until at least late April or May.

Most of the state parks are probably open this time of year.

March? Still may be a bit chilly at night, but check out the Teanaway area near Cle Elum. There is some excellent primitive camping there, as well as plently of oppurtunity in the area for hiking, fishing, swimming if it warms up enough during the day, etc. Some of the best primitive camping I've ever done was in that area. Plenty of campgrounds to chose from too!

I have been camping in June and gotten soaked. If you don't want to get wet then you have to go camping in July or August. In fact, we have gotten snow as late as April. March will provide very quiet campgrounds, for sure, but I suggest a good motor home or trailer. If you use a tent bring plenty of tarps.

The more primitive campgrounds are usually just in woods, no real places to fish. I too like the Cle Elum area, but there may still be frozen lakes and snow on the ground.

OK ... don't want to be sensible and go to Hawaii for camping in March?
I "camp" year around, including in Washington in winter. I do it in my self-converted, full-windowed mini-van ... looks like a soccer family vehicle ... no one knows I live inside (sometimes for literally months) as I travel around. That all said, camping in Washington and Oregon in winter / spring would be exceedingly unpleasant outside my little turtle shell. I have heater and cooking and even toilet systems inside ... I have a waaaay comfy warm dry bunk ... I can camp anyplace from parks to downtown Seattle and Portland ... and do. If you are talking tenting -- stick with bisjoe's advice: come back in July and August ...

really
