Default Thinking about relocating to Dayton Washington

Hi,
We now live in the lovely town of Mccall Idaho. When this wasn't the best find since Lewis & Clark it was a nice place to live with Tamarack resort it has brought confusion amongst locals.
We are considering Dayton is there any information on the town. We are in our late 40's with a middle schooler. Wondering about the schools and Blue Mountain Ski. Coming from Tamarack will be tough they are really promoting this place and there resort is going to be killer. But, for us we can see only the rich will be able to live here.

Hey, I just have to say - I lived in Endicott for 6yrs. I use to drive down to Dayton every weekend. Just about ANY small town in the Palouse is awsomeness. Some more than others but, Dayton and Uniontown both have really amazing Christmas light displays. The people are really great. The school districts are fabulous. I went to H.S down there and loved it. The education system challenges students on multiple levels. The only problem with moving to the small towns from Pullman down to the Oregon border is jobs. You may have to drive 40-50 miles to get to work and then, back again. I commuted 48 miles one way to Spokane everyday for school and I would still move back.

I grew up in Dayton, and loved it. In fact, my family and i are moving back next year. I have two young children that will be kindergarten age and want them to go to school in Dayton. It was a great learning environment. It was nice to be in a town where the children are really cared for and supported.

I lived in Dayton for 20 years--I grew up there. It was 25 years ago when I left. It's a great place to live although if you like shopping for things other than antiques you'll have to go to Walla Walla. They do have wireless internet there. They have a great trail system through town along the Touchet River if you like to walk, jog or bike. Dayton is somewhat removed from the rat race and the people are very friendly. The school is your typical small town school. The classroom sizes are on the smaller side. I had a total of three in my Physics class. Dayton hasn't really grown any over the years and the demographic has changed a bit more to senior citizens since people like to retire there. Dayton is in the 6 garden zone--warmer than a lot of eastern Washington. Bluewood is 22 miles away to the east--a beautiful drive along the North Touchet river. The river valley stays greener than a lot of eastern Washington and there is a lot of wild life. Almost tame deer wander along the trail through town. Not a lot of jobs in the immediate vicinity--best jobs are are in Walla Walla about 30 miles away.

I'm going to add that the drive between Pullman and Dayton has got to be one of the most depressing drives in the US (IMO).

Wildberries original post dates to 2006. Would be interesting to see what became of that dream, but don't hold your breath.

In general, Bluewod is a nice, small ski area with little real estate surrounding. Dayton is quite isolated, with Walla Walla and the Tri-Cities 1-2 hours away. Perhaps someday this area will be discovered by major investors, but it hasn't happened yet. For now, it is a nice getaway from the above-mentioned cities, but that is about it.

The drive that David describes is not that depressing. Rolling hills, and great colors during certain times of the year. Try Nebraska or Kansas for REAL depressing drives.

Hi,I'm trying to figure out a good fit for me in eastern wash. I've always lived on the west side and want to see more open country, less trees, rain and traffic.I do love church,I'm 58 single male, retiring truck driver, and a small town would do but bigger ok,but not bigger than WallaWalla,is that a good place. Are there small towns that are not all good old boy,and have a little bit of artistic, hippie type stuff.Do snakes and tics and spiders come in your house ? Thank you........George.......pager 360=992=7111

Ticks are only a problem along the river in the brush. We haven't had much problem in the past few years we've gone to the river to float or fish. Rattle snakes are farther up the North Touchet but we have never seen them in town on on my parents' place just outside of town. There are agressive house spiders around but you just squish them or bug bomb in the basement. There's a really good church in Dayton, Community Bible Church--the church I grew up in. There are other good churches in town. If you hang out with the church people you won't run into as many good ole boys. Walla Walla is ok but the size of the city lends itself to more crime than Dayton or Waitsburg. There are a lot of art galleries in Dayton but I wouldn't call it hippie type stuff. Moscow, ID is more of an artsy hippie place. Most towns in eastern, WA are very conservative.

Before moving to Eastern WA my husband and I lived on the west side Everett, Bothell, Issaquah then we moved to Walla Walla lived there for a while and then bought a house in Dayton. We loved it there it's a beautiful place. In fact we think that Waitsburg, Dayton, Pomeroy are the best little towns to live in on the east side. We've been in almost every county in eastern WA while hunting for a place to buy. We liked Okanogan county it has more conservative churches and has it's own beauty it's more rugged country and land is cheaper. We now live in Benton City, WA and regret we moved here we don't like Tri-Cities area at all. The weather is bad here worse than Dayton by much dry, windy, less trees or no trees and colder than Dayton also very little or no snow and lots of gray days in the fall/winter. This Summer we will be moving to TX my husbands birth place and I love TX it a great place to live but if we had to choose where to live in WA we would consider Okanogan county, if church was not an issue for us we would chose Walla Walla, Waitsburg, Dayton or Pomeroy - all these are just beautiful places to live. We are conservative christians with high standards so there was no church for us in Dayton area but for most people there are lots of churches to choose from in Dayton or surrounding areas.
