I find for a plant that needs some shade and of many varies are Hosta...Most are inexpensive and will last for years without any maintenance. Most have a tall pink flower that last for weeks. They can grow about two feet high and spread to about four feet in the right conditions.

We have about 30 of them, different varieties all across the front of the house which faces north and is shaded all day. They do great, but unfortunately, when the deer and rabbits find them they become tasty meals. We are dividing them to make more and replacing the thinner, lighter one with the darker, thicker textured leaf ones which the animals don't seem to like as well.
