My suggestion would be to visit the area in October/November when the rainy weather sets in.
I often tell people that they should visit during the overcast months (Oct-Jun), but people really need to experience W Wa from January-May. Between October and December, it's not that bad.

I've talked to so many people that grew up in W. WA, moved away and came back saying there is just no better place to live. As a few other people have posted, the emotions relating to gray skies are very personal. I happen to get recharged when the clouds come in and get a little grumpy when the sun is around for weeks at a time. This summer, though not as warm as is typical (from what I understand) got a little on the warm side for me. At about 80+ degrees I'm ready for some air conditioning!

My personal opinion is that the clouds and rain gets overstated a tad bit... but also keep in mind that without it we wouldn't have the absolutely stunning landscapes, green all around, abundant flowers, lakes, rivers and streams everywhere ... we wouldn't have all the mouth watering delicious fruits in the summer, etc. - all the things and more that make W. WA a beautiful place to call home.
