We're going camping in Birch Bay the first week in September, we've been there before and know most of the things to do that are actually in Birch Bay (mini golf, go karts, waterslides, beach, ect) but our kids are too small to really do some of the attractions, they are 2 and 5.

So I'm wondering what there is to do a bit farther away, like Bellingham, that would be good for kids their ages.

TIA!

Check out the Bellingham railway museum:

Bellingham Railway Museum Homepage
(kids can operate the trains- mine love it)

Childrens museum:
Whatcom Museum of History and Art
(great for kids' 5 and under)

and Larabee State Park:
Larrabee State Park (page 1 of 2)
(nice tidepools, sandstone climbing rocks and a playground)

There are many city parks in Bellingham with nice playgrounds. If you go to the tourist info. place they'll give you a map showing pictures of them so you can choose.
