June 1, 2012. Yes, the state liquor stores will be closed down since the bill essentially kicks the State out of the liquor selling business.

My understanding is the state liqour stores are not required to be shut down on June 1st. Whether they can compete, is a different issue. I would expect most will close soon after this date.

I would think the state stores would be turned into private liquor stores, possibly keeping many of the same employees - that would make the most sense, the location, staff, and building interior are already in place to be a liquor store.

But I don't know for sure that this will happen.

Mitch, I think this will be a good option for many, especiallly in smaller towns. However, if there is a supermarket in your town large enough to sell liquour, the road will be tough.

State Liquour stores may still exist into 2013, but they will need to re-brand themselves, perhaps even offering food items. The new competition will be difficult, but maybe some will be able to turn this "state" brand into something unique and appealing. This is where good marketing comes into play, and state liqour stores in WA would be smart to hire these professionals.

The sign, "liqour", alone will become a thing of the past. Now it will be Safeway, with a liquour mention right along with pharmacy and fresh produce.

I think this is progress. Yes, some may be unemployed by this, but the end result wlll be more employed in the general marketplace.

I truely believe this was a good move for WA, and I fully expect Oregon to copy it by 2013. (They always copy WA success.) Idaho probably will take longer. Wyoming and Montana are still state controlled, but watch for both to start discussing this issue.

Bottom line, there is a momentem regionally that happens with these decisions. Oregon will be be there soon, Montana soon after. WA leads the way of these type of issues, and should, as they are the largest state in the West after California.
