People are always complaining about the Weather in Washington, but my feeling is that the "good surprises" are plentiful. Like this weekend and today, mid-September and its going to be 80 out here on the beach (and its not 80 and shoulder to shoulder people like in So cal or Hawaii, its 80 and I might as well own the beach because you can walk for miles and see only 1 or 2 others).

We often have pockets of sunshine during unexpected times: February's pineapple express, the week of 70+ weather in April. I find it so much more special than the weeks-on-end of sunny weather I lived with in Los Angeles because of the surprise factor.

However, I think the day to day weather is highly over exaggerated as well... my husband and I, who are both transplants to the area... that the weather in the PNW is a big conspiracy by Microsoft to keep as many Californians out as possible ... you know "tell them it rains all the time". Our 5 years in Seattle, I never experienced (or knew anyone who experienced) SAD or real weather related depression. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I'm just saying that in a forum like this it can get blown out of proportion.

Does anyone agree?

We've felt that way long before Microsoft came into being.

I know a lot of people feel differently... it just seems that the negative view is often the most discussed (that is the way it is with everything), and I wanted to share a different point of view.

Plus, the weather is particularly amazing out here on the beach today, and I wanted to gloat a little It's almost too hot for me today!

I totally disagree. And I'm a very positive perky person - I never thought I'd get SAD - but I did and this board has helped me get through it (not feeling like I was the only one)

Also b eing a Calif transplant, the nice day or pockets as you called them - is not enough. I came from a place that the "pockets" would be for months - not a day here and there.

You certainly do not want to come to the SE! That is our nice fall weather.

I completely agree with you......but I also still live in Cali.....so even though I've spent a lot of time in WA I can't say with authority b/c I don't live there yet. But all my friends there.......four Cali transplant couples.....have all adjusted to the weather just fine.

On another note.....I'd really like to know why there is so much hostility towards Californians. ???? Maybe better left for another thread.

I never felt the hostility toward Californians, except in online forums

When I moved here from LA in 2001, I was living in Capital Hill and I immediately fell into a crowd of gen-x-ers that were mostly transplants from the midwest and California. The few people that we hung out with that were local born and raised Seattleites never made any comments. I drove my little escort with California tags for several months and never had that experience.

It does seem more prevelant on the forums than in real life.....at least my Cali friends haven't had any bad experiences yet while living in WA. Hmmm??? Maybe people use these forums to vent about how they "really" feel????

I have a question about this - what do you do with the lakes and the hot weather and the beaches. Do you swim? Surf? Waterski? Or is the water never warm enough to actually go in it...
