Haven't given up (yet) on moving back to the "greater" Seattle area. Now looking at Renton but unfamiliar with most neighborhoods and what rentals go for. We are retired and have a large dog plus 2 cats. Which neighborhoods are safest? Would any houses or condos rent for $900 or less?

Five seconds on CL found this Small Private one bedroom home for rent (http://seattle.craigslist.org/skc/apa/2918163382.html - broken link). You'll just have to sift through CL. The fact that you have animals will make it all that much harder though. Despite this being a place known for high levels of dog ownership, not many places allow pets or do with very high deposits. They tend to go VERY fast.

My sister lives in the Fairwood/Lake Young neighborhood of Renton and says there's a house down the street from her selling for 149K... says the mortgage on that would work out to be $705/mo. Since the animals present a challenge for renting, why don't the OP look into buying a home?

Fairwood isn't at all far from civilization, it's an older neighborhood. Valley Medical Center is about a 10 min drive (a little bit more with traffic)... you've got a couple shopping areas to choose from, lots of trees around, very quiet.
