I am looking at some rental houses and many of them use propane. I have zero experience with propane.

If you have propane, what did you pay for it per gallon this winter?

I paid $2.96/gal this winter with Cenex, plus a yearly lease fee of $64 for the tank.

Look for a place with wood stove much cheaper to heat that way.

Believe me, I am trying. :/ I am having a lot of trouble finding a house with the set up I have now: wood stove and electric. Most things I have looked at have had either a propane or natural gas set up.

Where? / size of house?;

Climate is very different in WA (as are heating needs and propane access). For primary heat, propane is SPENDY (like $200+/month EZ). and likely to climb. Also the carrier / lease holder. Some (few) are owned tanks, then you can search for best price. MOST are leased and you can get HOSED. Cenex, (Co-op) I would trust, most (private) I would not. If it is a dinky place, I see lots of folks locally getting the 30 gal tank size and hauling them to RV place to fill (not that this is legal or safe, or EZ...).

I just rented a very nice cottage on 2 acres with 95% wood and 5% electric heat. It is toasty!

I apologize. Western Washington and single story, about 1500sqf. I keep the house now between 65-70F. The house I am looking at in particular is about 7 years old and well insulated.

When I came home today, I found a heating comparison calculator. I am not sure how accurate it is, but I put in some propane prices and it estimated the cost. I guess around $107 a month @ $2.69 a gallon. In Feb, my electric bill was $191 because we mostly ran out of the large rack (not sure of the exact amount) of free wood we had gotten in the summer. I figure about $110-120 of that was heating cost based on total summer electricity usage of $60-$80 a month (never turned on the baseboards). Seems like it will be about a wash between propane and electric baseboard at $2.69-$2.89. My house now is the same size as the one I am looking to rent, 1500sqf.
