Default commuting to Spanaway -- where to live?

I am wondering if there is a safe, family-friendly city or town within commuting distance to Spanaway. We have young kids, so safety, good schools, and kids' activities are priorities. The commute would be on the earlier side if that helps. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks so much in advance!

University Place and Steilacoom would be about a half hour commute and have good schools. if I remember correctly, Steilacoom is the oldest town in the state and has a lot of cool old houses. Bonney Lake also has good schools, maybe slightly over half an hour.

I don't know much about the schools in the area but I do believe that Puyallup has decent schools/activities for the kids than the area around Spanaway. If you were on the South Hill you could just roll right down 160th/152nd or 176th to work and it's probably 20 mins tops to Spanaway.
