Hi, I am new to the state and I will be here for 7 more weeks. I have driven on HWY 12 through Mt rainier national park....but there weren't very many view of MT. Rainier (I can only remember like one or two) and it just bugs me how close/large/beautiful Mt. Rainier looks in the backdrop of Tacoma. My question is: is there a road I can take to get me as close as possible to the base for a stunning view? Looking through Google Earth, it seems like Mowich lake road gets super close.

Due to missing a street I needed to turn in during my days in long haul trucking, I accidentally found a road that has a great view of Mt. Rainier. From HWY 512, take the Pacific Ave (HWY 7) and go south. After several miles, you'll come to the 507/7 split. You'll want to continue south on 7. Go several more miles to 224th St E and turn east (left turn). Once you're in a clearing from the trees, Mt. Rainier will be very visible. The view isn't all that bad, IMO.

I'm all the way in Olympia and get amazing views of Mt. Rainier on my drive to work. The key is - it must be a clear day. We lived here for a month before even catching a glimpse of Rainier. If you want to be close to Rainier and get a view, if my memory serves me correctly, there is a pretty sick view from the road going to the Sunrise Visitor Center at Mt. Rainier National Park.

The flight from Seattle to Yakima goes right past Mount Rainier (you need to be sitting on the starboard side of the aircraft) with a superb view of Mount Rainier on a clear day.

+1 on that. Nice place to eat on top as well. If the weather is good you can sit outside and get really nice views in all directions.
